Your extinguisher tags expire on a schedule. The inspector's visit doesn't. Who reads your tag depends on your address

Title 19 sets one rule statewide: a firm and a technician licensed by the State Fire Marshal must do the service. Enforcement is local. Here's how it splits:

• Unincorporated county: the County Fire Marshal's Community Risk Reduction Division inspects businesses inside the San Diego County Fire Protection District for Consolidated Fire Code compliance, including commercial fire protection systems. The same program also covers the Deer Springs Fire Protection District.
• City of San Diego: the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department's Fire Prevention Bureau does fire inspections in the city, and it takes complaints only for the city and the Port of San Diego.
• Other cities: many, such as Vista, run their own fire prevention bureaus. Ask yours.

Emergency response in the unincorporated area comes from San Diego County Fire, where CAL FIRE provides fire protection under contract with the County across about 1.73 million acres. Not sure which office covers you? Call your local fire marshal before inspection day.

The 2026 code change

The 2026 San Diego County Consolidated Fire Code holds the County's amendments to the 2025 California Fire Code, along with the ordinances of the unincorporated fire protection districts. The City of San Diego put the 2025 California Fire Code into effect on January 1, 2026, through amendments in its own Municipal Code. Other cities pass their own ordinances. Portable extinguishers fall under California Fire Code Section 906. Since County documents list both January 1 and April 2, 2026 as effective dates, ask your fire marshal which edition and date apply to your building.

What happens on a service visit

Your staff checks each unit by eye once a month. Once a year, our technician does the full maintenance and records it on a new tag. Longer cycles run on top of that:

• Annual: full maintenance and a new tag.
• 6 years: dry chemical teardown.
• 12 years: dry chemical hydro test.
• 5 years: hydro test for CO2, water and Class K.

Match the agent to the hazard

The right class beats a bigger count. Class A is for ordinary combustibles, B for flammable liquids, C for energized electrical, D for combustible metals and K for cooking oils and fats. A kitchen with a hood suppression system also needs a Class K portable unit, and our kitchen fire suppression service handles the hood system itself. If you provide extinguishers for employees to use, OSHA requires training at hire and at least once a year after that, so pair your service with on-site fire extinguisher training.

Don't wait for an inspector to find an old tag

Inspections can run behind. A County Grand Jury report found that in fiscal 2025, San Diego Fire-Rescue completed 75% of required school inspections and 47% of required hotel, motel and multifamily inspections, even though California law calls for annual inspection of R-1 and R-2 occupancies. Your tag still expires on time. Keep it current.

Fire risk maps changed too. The State Fire Marshal's revised hazard maps for San Diego County, released March 24, 2025, show 26% more very high hazard acreage, and the City of San Diego added zones of its own in July 2025. Newly mapped? Ask your fire marshal what changed.
