California Title 19 tags and your local fire department

California Title 19 says a licensed technician must service every portable extinguisher once a year and add a new tag. The tag shows the technician’s license number, the month and year, the agent inside, and the next service date. We fill the tag in ink and add a verification collar under the valve each time we recharge or open a unit, so an inspector can read the history without taking it off the wall.

Los Angeles County has many fire departments. The Los Angeles County Fire Department covers unincorporated areas and dozens of contract cities, while Los Angeles, Long Beach, Pasadena, Glendale, Burbank and Santa Monica run their own. A State Fire Marshal tag is valid with all of them, so one visit from us keeps you compliant no matter which inspector knocks.

The NFPA 10 service cycle we follow

NFPA 10 sets the schedule that Title 19 builds on. We track each cylinder by serial number so no date slips past you:

  • Monthly: a quick visual check your staff can do, gauge in the green, pin and seal in place, no damage, clear access.
  • Yearly: a full maintenance check by our technician, plus a new Title 19 tag.
  • 6 years: an internal exam for most stored-pressure dry chemical units.
  • 12 years: a hydrostatic pressure test for dry chemical cylinders. CO2 and water units test on a 5-year cycle.

When a unit leaves for hydrostatic testing, we drop off a loaner so your coverage never has a gap.

Ports, refineries and warehouse logistics

The Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach and the warehouse belt around Wilmington, San Pedro, Carson and the City of Industry move fuel, chemicals and stacked goods every day. These sites lean heavily on Class B extinguishers for flammable liquids and large wheeled units for open yards. Forklift-mounted and dock units take a beating, so we bench-test them often and rotate out any cylinder that is due. Cold-storage buildings get units rated for freezing temperatures, because standard dry chemical can cake in the cold.

Film studios, stages and tech

From Hollywood and Burbank to Culver City, Sylmar and the studios in Santa Clarita, soundstages and post-production suites are full of cameras, servers and lighting gear. These rooms use CO2 and clean agent extinguishers that knock down a fire without coating sensitive equipment in powder. Prop, paint and pyro areas need Class B units as well. We map each stage and tag every unit so a studio fire safety officer can find it fast.

Restaurants, hotels and high-rise offices

Los Angeles County has tens of thousands of commercial kitchens, from Koreatown and the San Gabriel Valley to the beach cities. Every cook line needs a Class K wet chemical extinguisher within 30 feet of the fryer or broiler to back up the hood system. Downtown high-rises, hotels and offices run ABC units on every floor at NFPA 10 travel distances, with CO2 added at server closets. We handle the full mix and keep one record for the whole property.

Aerospace, aviation and hospitals

El Segundo, Long Beach and the South Bay host aerospace plants and shops that need clean agent or specialty units near precision equipment, plus Class D agents where crews work with metals like magnesium and titanium. Around LAX and the regional airports, hangars carry Class B foam units next to their fixed systems. County hospitals run a careful mix, ABC and water-mist in corridors, non-magnetic CO2 near MRI suites, and Class B foam in generator rooms, and we tag every unit against a plan we keep with your facilities team.

Recharge, hydrostatic testing and refurbishing

We recharge any unit after it is used or after a 6-year internal exam, weighing the agent in and out so the log is exact. Cylinders due for hydrostatic testing get pressure tested to DOT and NFPA 10 standards, then stamped and returned. Units that pass pressure but look worn get stripped, repainted in code-compliant red and re-tagged. Condemned cylinders are crushed so they can never come back into service.

Fire Extinguisher Service FAQ for Los Angeles County

How often does California require fire extinguisher service in Los Angeles County?
California Title 19 requires a licensed technician to service every portable extinguisher once a year and add a new tag. On top of that, NFPA 10 sets a 6-year internal exam for most dry chemical units and a 12-year hydrostatic test. Your staff should also do a quick visual check each month. We handle the annual, 6-year and 12-year work and track every due date for you.
Which fire department inspects my extinguishers in Los Angeles County?
It depends on your city. The Los Angeles County Fire Department covers unincorporated areas and dozens of contract cities, while Los Angeles, Long Beach, Pasadena, Glendale, Burbank and Santa Monica run their own departments. A Title 19 tag from a State Fire Marshal-licensed technician is valid with every one of them, so our service satisfies whichever authority inspects your building.
What kind of fire extinguisher does my business need?
It depends on the hazard. Offices and retail use ABC dry chemical. Restaurant cook lines need a Class K wet chemical unit within 30 feet of the fryer. Server rooms and studios often use CO2 or clean agent so they do not coat electronics in powder. Warehouses near the ports may need Class B units for flammable liquids. We survey your site and match the right type and rating to each area.
Do you come to my location?
Yes. Our technicians come to your office, restaurant, warehouse or job site anywhere in Los Angeles County at no extra travel cost. We service your extinguishers on site, swap in loaner units when a cylinder leaves for hydrostatic testing, and leave you with current tags and a clean record for your next inspection.
